Sumac is a red spice that is made by crushing dried Fruits of the sumac bush to make a purple powder which has a lightly astringent sour flavour, it is one of the main ingredients in Palestine’s national dish.
Sumac is full of vitamin C, Omega 3 fatty acids, protein, fiber, and important trace minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. It has been used across globe for its endless medicinal properties and uses. It is used to treat diabetes, constipation, coolant, bed wetting and other bladder disorders. In addition to being antifungal, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, it can potentially be used in treating hypertension and degenerative cardiac disorders.
This spice powder is used in much the same way as tamarind or lemon juice. It is used to season kebabs and other grilled meats, as well as fish stews, or rice dishes. Also, try sprinkling it over a bowl of hummus or taboulleh. Mix a little into vinaigrette for salad, or use it wherever you might add a dash of paprika for an unexpected pop of flavor.
